The Instigators

Former convict Casey Affleck teams up with ex-Marine Matt Damon for what seems like a simple heist, but their plan consistently goes wrong in mildly amusing ways.

Both actors have starred in great heist movies like the Ocean’s Trilogy. However, while watching this one, I kept thinking about how much more I enjoyed Casey Affleck in The Town. But it turns out he wasn’t in that. He was in Tower Heist with Eddie Murphy, which was pretty good too. Maybe that’s the problem with this movie: it’s entertaining, but there are too many moments where random distractions seem more appealing than paying attention.

Perhaps the budget was spent on the cast. The movie features a ton of recognizable faces, but their acting presence added nothing significant to the story. The supporting cast includes Alfred Molina (Doc Ock / Maverick), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Toby Jones (usually playing the ugly bad guy), and Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction). Any of these roles could have been given to a new actor with fresh energy. Instead, we get a lumbering Ving Rhames slowly entering and exiting scenes. Ron Perlman also had little opportunity to bring anything special to his role as the Mayor, a small part with minimal screentime — hardly enough for him to show off his unique charm.

Overall, this film is a fun watch, but not something to seek out. If it happens to be in front of you, hit play and stuff some popcorn in your face.
