Self Reliance is a rare gem of a movie where the premise is fresh, unique, and oddly intruiging.
The story follows a normal guy through his pointless existence. His family doesn’t much care for him, he has no friends, has an unrewarding day job, and society looks down on him as a loser with no future. One day he encounters a proposal that will net him a million dollars if he’s successful. He obviously can’t turn the offer down, because what does he have to lose?
I won’t ruin any of the plot points because it’s certainly worth the watch. I really enjoyed this one - with the exception of the ending. The last few minutes answered all the questions when not answering them would have been much more interesting. The payoff wasn’t like something you’d see out of The Sixth Sense, The Usual Suspects, or Identity, so I’m honestly not sure why they bothered wrapping everything up.
